Orientation dependence of the Cu„001... surface step stiffness: Failure of solid-on-solid and Ising models to describe experimental data

چکیده
We have investigated the step stiffness on Cu~001! surfaces as a function of step orientation by two independent methods at several temperatures near 300 K. Both sets of data agree well and show a substantial dependence of the stiffness on the angle of orientation. With the exception of steps oriented along ^110&, the experimental stiffness is significantly larger than the stiffness calculated within the solid-on-solid model and the Ising model, even if next-nearest-neighbor interactions are taken into account. Our results have considerable consequences for the understanding and for the theoretical modeling of equilibrium and growth phenomena, such as step meandering instabilities.

Orientation dependence of the stiffness of surface steps: an analysis based on anisotropic elasticity
Motivated by recent experimental work that shows that the orientation dependence of the stiffness of steps on Cu surfaces differs significantly from the predictions of Ising and solid-on-solid modes, we study the effect of elastic anisotropy on the stiffness of steps on (1 0 0), (1 1 0) and (1 1 1) surfaces of cubic materials. The contribution to the stiffness due to elastic relaxation is obtai...
متن کاملLow-temperature orientation dependence of step stiffness on {111} surfaces
For hexagonal nets, descriptive of 111 fcc surfaces, we derive from combinatoric arguments a simple, low-temperature formula for the orientation dependence of the surface step line tension and stiffness, as well as the leading correction, based on the Ising model with nearest-neighbor NN interactions. Our formula agrees well with experimental data for both Ag and Cu 111 surfaces, indicating tha...
متن کاملExtended Lattice Gas Interactions of Cu on Cu(111) and Cu(001): Ab-Initio Evaluation and Implications
We present ab-initio calculations of a variety of different lattice-gas interaction energies between Cu adatoms on Cu(001) and Cu(111). We find the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions to be negligible on Cu(111), explaining the success of the nearest-neighbor (NN) Ising model when describing the Cu(111) step stiffness. On Cu(001), however, we find that NNN interactions are roughly (1/7) th...

An experimental study is conducted on three ½ scales, single-story, single-bay, frame specimens. The first specimen was a reinforced concrete frame with solid-brick infill. The second specimen was a reinforced concrete frame with hollow clay perforated-brick infill. The last specimen was a reinforced concrete frame without any infill. These three specimens were tested by pseudostatic method. Di...
متن کاملReflection From Free Surface of a Rotating Generalized Thermo-Piezoelectric Solid Half Space
The analysis of rotational effect on the characteristics of plane waves propagating in a half space of generalized thermo-piezoelectric medium is presented in context of linear theory of thermo-piezoelectricity including Coriolis and centrifugal forces. The governing equations for a rotating generalized thermo-piezoelectric medium are formulated and solved for plane wave solutions to show the p...
